Like Last Thursday Only With Shorter People

Is she STILL talking about graduation? Yes. Yes, she is. This time the milestone was achieved by Girl-Child. She made it through preschool, folks! And she has the diploma to hang on the wall of her future office of pediatric dentistry -Whaaaa??? Those suckers make bank, yo- inevitably along with that little slip of paper from Harvard. I'm going to ignore the cynical layer of myself that lurks just below my upper epidermis; the part of me that acknowledges the ridiculousness event that is preschool graduation, and embrace its adorableness. Because really? How cute -can you stand it?

And while the nursery rhyme type version of Pomp and Circumstance does not have the same huevos, or eggs if you will, as does the original; it still gives a stealthy kung-fu kick to the ol' heart strings.

A three hour pizza and pajama party for the grads followed the event at the school. When I arrived to pick Girl-Child up at 9pm something suddenly became very clear to her. The ceremony? The party? The hugging, kissing, and goodbyes? Girl-Child had her Oprah "aha" moment. The little girl who's been eagerly anticipating her entry into kindergarten. The child who has talked about little else with such consistency and enthusiasm in the last year and a half; in an instant realized that this. was. it. She would not be returning to this school. To her friends. To her teachers. And Girl-Child lost. her. shit. To say she freaked out would just insult the whole spectacle. A level seven meltdown was in progress and it took myself and two teachers to regain some semblance of control. She didn't want to go. She wanted to move in. She wasn't coming home. And kindergarten could kiss. her. ass.

Yesterday morning, in a full scale effort to coax some enthusiasm back into her life, I did what any respectable mother would: I took her shopping for new school clothes that are special just for kindergarten. We buried ourselves in dresses, skorts, tanks, shorts, and tees. We'll call it productive retail therapy. And now she's all, "Preschool, who?". So what if she just wants to wear the new outfits; sometimes that's my only motivation to get out of bed in the morning. Am I right?

We just did the pre-K graduation too. Although I am not sure if my daughter doesn't care or doesn't realize she'll be leaving those friends behind. But I'll admit I teared up a bit on her last day. NO MORE BABIES HERE!

Those tiny graduation gowns are so adorable! I had a preschool graduate this year too, but our school doesn't do a graduation. I was feeling a little cheated until I got to the part where GC lost her shit. I can see that happening here. But retail therapy does cure most things!

Retail therapy rocks.

I also highly recommend new crayon shopping. Nothing says "ah, that's better" than a 64-box with built in sharpener.

Retail therapy is a good thing. And that picture is cuuuuute.

The super-cute gowns almost make up for the cheesey that is a Pre-K graduation (the theory, not so much the actuality--I imagine that in a few years, we will be throwing a party each and every time our children manage to wake up without extensive assistance because we are getting so carried away with inventing reasons to celebrate things our kids do). (If that's not the longest parenthesis statement of all time, I don't want to see the one that was.)

You make cute kids. Perhaps you should have another. ;-)

What makes me cry about preschool graduation? That it was ten years ago for my baby and that she will be a (gasp!) sophomore this year. Quick! Where's a Talbots?

I can't believe the little caps & gowns! Too much! :-) They are the same color as Kate's.

So how many presents did Girlchild receive for graduation? :-)

Okay, that's pretty darn funny. Another reason to be thankful there's no fuss about leaving preschool here! But yes, a pretty outfit does help me to get out of bed some days, too, despite hating to shop.

Oh, my God. How cute!!!!

We were lucky with My Son - his preschool offered After School care for kindergarteners, so his transistion was easy. Plus, the kindergarteners totally ruled each afternoon.

They have minature robes? How cute is that?

I love the lei (spelled right?), too.

So did you throw a Hawaian-themed grad party afterwards with lots of magaritas and pina coladas? I think drinking is in order, here.

Tootsie, you know all. I am insanely impressed by the retail therapy idea that you have Girl-child. Also, she is just to cutest thing ever in that red grad geer. :)

Wow, I didn't even go to my own college graduation - but to see pre-schoolers in cap-and-gown? I can get on board with this cuteness. All for the retail therapy too - whatever it takes.

The bad news is...our kids pretty much have a graduation ceremony every year. The madness!
Too cute.

Are you kidding? Every Kindergarten promotion ceremony made me totally verklempt.

okay...so the miniature cap and gowns and the lei...all very cute and Kodak-picture worthy...but how damn cute is it that their legs weren't long enough for those chairs!! Those little feet just dangling there are precious!!!

And I envy your Mother-daughter retail-therapy bonding time....not the same with 2 slightly stinky boys who care squat about anything other than DSlite or beetles and bugs.~~sigh~~

She is ADORABLE!!! And retail thereapy is the BEST therapy out there.

She is ADORABLE!

and I am totally dreading the day we have to leave Gavin's daycare to attend one closer to his school...he is going to be a mess to not see his favorite teachers and friends anymore (he's been there since he was 7 weeks old). It's going to be hard on all of us and I'm not sure I have enough $$ to do some retail therapy for him...guess I should start saving how.

OOOOOOOOOOH Poor Girl Child. I feel for her. At age 43 I still once in a while have a level 7 meltdowns at Oprah Aha moments.
You are a wise mom.....shopping cures everything!
Thank you for the Tag.......I did it! :-)

Wow, that is some impressive graduate. She looks like she is ready to take on the world.

All caught up on reading your last two weeks of entries. Thank you for taking an hour of my time. Why is it I can't read a novel again these days??? Oh yeah, you're better than a novel anyways.

My little guy had a preschool graduation last month and it is as ridiculous as it is cute, I agree.

KEEP BELIEVING

Why do you think I HAD to buy two new dresses this weekend?

She's adorable BTW...:-)

Retail therapy works. And so does chocolate. That's what I am using right now for myself to get through the long summer days. Who knew they had robes this small? Too cute.

Productive retail therapy, indeed. Smart woman.

Those pictures are so cute. She's adorable.

My oldest is graduating from Pre-K in 2 weeks and I have mixed feelings. I LOVE her new school, and LOVE the idea of her being in school all day, LOVE the idea of NOT paying tuition. But... the days of staying home so we can watch movies in our jammies? Pretty much gone.

Mrs. G. said...

She looks so cute in that graduation gear. You must be exhausted from all the pride!

MommyTime said...

Not that I envy the Losing Her Shit Kodak Moment, but I do look forward longingly to the day when "going shopping with my child" involves more than hissing threateningly to abandon said child in the store if he/she does not "come out from under that rack right NOW." Thank you for giving me hope.

Yessss... new outfits for school. And brand new crayons. Both STILL make me feel better.

I have a preschool graduate too; no graduation outfits or night-time party for us, and I'm quite happy about that, actually.

We almost had a graduation here. I decided to hold him back one more year. Born in Sept., he would have been the youngest in the class like I was. It sucked. So now he'll be the oldest, which will rock when it's time for drivers licenses. No, the $600 dollar a month jump in tuition had nothing to do with my decision.

Did your daughter stand up and shout, "Kegger at my house!" after the ceremony?

JCK said...

OH, this post got to me. Girl Child ...I can imagine her with all those new outfits! You are right. You are right.

Jenn @ Juggling Life said...

You are Social Butterfly's kind of mommy.

Which I am not. I am the mean mommy who thinks that if you run a raging fever on the day of your
8th grade graduation and can barely stand through the ceremony, you might need to rest the next day if you have any hope of attending the killer beach party the next night. Gosh, I'm such a total beyotch.

You're daughter will never be like that I'm sure!

That is some serious cuteness. And you're right, retail therapy makes it all better. My 7 y.o. is already jazzed about school in the fall because I bought her cherry red suede mary janes. Yeah, I rock.

Minnesota Matron said...

Yes, yes. Not one darn thing cuter. After watching my five-year old take his first gymnastics class tonight, I am of the official and correct opinion that whatever the youngest done is THE MOST ADORABLE THING,EVER.

And the Matron? She's looking good, moniker aside, and dresses for everything, even grocery store and laundry. One can 'dress' even in sportswear and leisure. . ..
