Her Sense of Style Borders Extreme

The Girl-Child and I took a trip to Tilly's because I wanted a pair of calf length leggings. What? Yeah, I know. See, I bought some full length leggings like almost a year ago and I just wore them for the first time a week or so ago. I had to first come to terms with the fact that I would be wearing leggings for the first time since 1992 and in order to prepare, I had to visit my tremendous place of courage. I believe that may be located somewhere just north of my spleen; which would explain why it took so long to find it. When I finally slipped them on, I was shocked at the hugeness of them because how can something look so small on a hanger and not be? I know it's been a while, but I don't think leggings are supposed to have that much slack in them; and if I pulled them all the way up then the waist nestled comfortably against my nipples. It just seemed wrong, ya know? But I'm really liking the look with sundresses. I also like sundresses with jeans, but those I have plenty of. So, anyway...Tilly's. It's the place to shop if "Skater At Any Age" is the look you seek. They meet all of your skater needs. They also have really cute clothes for kids, although a smidge pricier than Target and Old Navy. Girl-Child spies a shirt that she HAS TO HAVE RIGHT NOW MOMMY PLEASE IT'S PINK!!! and she makes a bee-line for it. [Quick aside: Do your kids ever run kind of hunkered over like say, oh, an Olympic speed skater? Just asking because that's what she did] I can see it and it's not what I would choose for my My Little Pony loving girl. So I'm picking up others along the way trying to dazzle her with my own taste and even resorting to jazz hands, "hey, look! This one has a unicorn on it" and then "nevermind" when I realize it's dusted with a fine layer of GLITTER. I avoid bringing glitter into my home at all costs (i.e. Nice school project, Sweetie! Let's keep this in the garage!). So then I was like, how about this? This is pink!

Or this? It's Paul Frank! Look! MONKEY!

And she was all, "No. I want this one Mommy".

Sigh. Hopefully someday we won't be at the tattoo parlor where I'm trying to distract her with a more discreet tramp-stamp.

Yep. Nothing says sugar and spice like skull on pink.

I was at Kohl's the other day looking at t-shirts for my son, and almost all of the ones I saw had skulls on them. When did the skull become iconic for children's clothing? What does it mean? I'm a desperate woman in search of answers.

And, yeah, I would have totally bought the shirt for my girl, too. (But, Mommy, I like thiiissss one...)

I was out shopping for my oldest who is now wearing a size 8 (smallest large boys size) and was SHOCKED to see everything had a fire breathing dragon or skull or poison signs or evil looking faces or whatever. I had a hard time finding anything discreet. I'm just not into letting him look that old yet when he is only 6-1/2. He doesn't go shopping with me, so he doesn't know they are out there or that is all he would want, too.

KEEP BELIEVING

But tramp stamps don't come with glitter so it can't be all that bad.

The unicorn days are over, Mama. I believe a primer called "hygiene for your delicate feminine area PIERCING" is in order.

Just FYI, American Apparel has zebra stripe leggings for only $45.00. I know, that's what I said.

Arrrrgh avast and shiver me timbers, seems you need a little guidance from the Guide To Pirate Parenting. (pirateparenting.blogspot.com) Yes Jack and his wares have invaded all our lives and our children's clothing. At least mine are teens and find the Pirate stuff to "emo" for them. Whew.

I'd say your in trouble if they start making tattoos with glitter...They don't, do they?

OMG, I want that shirt! I love pink skulls...there is just something so girlie about them...NOT! ;)

By the time she is old enough to get a tramp stamp they will totally come with cute sparkles of sorts.

I need to start shopping outside of J.Crew. Leggings sound like fun for the summer. ;)

Well...Patrick seems to like it. Or is he just frakking with you. He does that.

I hate tats, but one with glitter??? Just maybe...

Of course! Every young child should have images of the dead on their shirt. Why didn't I realize that sooner? I must go out and buy the Toddler a t-shirt with a decomposing mummy on it immediately.

I've lost count of how many shirts with skulls my son now has. He'll be 9 next week and has taken quite a vested interest in his apparel for the past 6 months or so. The only safe (read: skull free) store anymore is Childrens Place which I just can't seem to get to as frequently as Target.

I wonder what she thinks the faces are. I'm sure my daughter would not know they were skulls, and would think they were "halloween faces" or something.

Oh come on, that shirt rocks!! I love it, and because it's on such a cute kid it will look awesome and sweet.

LOVE Tilly's, rather my daughter LOVES Tilly's. My son was six when he wore his first skull, I'm sooo over it now. Skull, schmull. Your girl's top is cute. My daughter never likes what I like, always has her own ideas. My advice: learn to let it go now - it will make it easier on you later.

Your problem:
the waist nestled comfortably against my nipples

My problem:
My nipples nestle comfortably against my waist.

What? I breastfed FOUR CHILDREN.

I think she has excellent taste-skulls are the very latest fashion trend in my classroom. I really do like that Monkey though.

Who can resist the monkey?

I am skkkeeered! I like/ed the whole leggins with sundress thing too but I am not sure if I can do it twice in one life time. Although, leggins cover a multitude of sins when paired with a dress...

Glad to know it's not just my house. Mine has skipped the skull apparel and has gone right to wishing for a tattoo and tongue piercing for her 6th birthday. I kid you not...and here I thought she'd be happy with dance lessons.

AAh, I love 4 year olds. Mine has the paul frank monkey t-shirt and a pink shirt with white skulls all over it and thermal long sleeves. Her dad bought it for her in LA of course. She always pairs it with the girliest frilly skirt.

See I would just be thrilled it doesn't have some overly mass marketed princess on it!

Skulls are OK. Tattoos are OK. Glitter is EVIL!

I think I would have done the same thing. I love the first choice. But at least she knows what she wants!

Love your blog - found you through a friend's comments.

Skulls? Oh, dear. If I put that on my son, the hubby & my parents would throw me into the confessional faster than I could say, "Bless me father..." Oh, dear. I see what you're getting at.

LOL, skulls and pink? Wow, what a combo! I agree, when did skulls become the "in" thing for kids under let's say 20???

Awww, Toots, the pink girly-skulls are all the rage right now. Loopy is sporting pink skull (glitter!) earrings. Personally, I'd have also gone for the monkey. Julius rules.

First, why did leggings EVER have to come back? Like they weren't heinous enough the first time 'round...?

Second, nothing like a skull to scream girlishness, huh? Oh, the times - the TIMES how they've changed!

I love that shirt!

Hey didn't Lindsay Lohan just come out with a line of leggings? That just seems ripe for the snarking!

MommyTime said...

I LOVE the monkey shirt and am therefore not at all surprised she would choose the skulls one. Isn't that one of the purposes of children? To challenge their parents' fashion sense at every turn? My mother's favorite sentence in the mornings was, "So, that's the outfit for the day, huh?" Start practicing. It's a useful one.

You'd better check under her bed for "the pot." She seems like she's getting pretty out of hand!

That blasted independence! What's she thinking anyway?

I can't count the number of skull-adorned items my daughter has. They're usually accompanied by perky hearts; maybe the message is "I can be sweet, but also deadly, m*therf*cker." I'm just guessing.

Oh, do you mind if I swear?

I encourage it.

She takes your suggestions OH SO WELL. Perhaps, just perhaps she's in cahoots with my daughter?

Skulls and electric guitars make me happy too. Much happier than unicorns can. The girl knows cool, what can you do? Tilly's you say? I'm there.
