It's October in California...

...Do you know where your raging brush fire is?

Yesterday morning I alternated between cleaning house, reading blogs, and watching predictable breaking news about a fire located on the other side of the mountain range that nestles up against my neighborhood. It was 2003 all over again.

In October of 2003
, a fire in the same location, took an exit stage east when the wind suddenly switched direction; resulting in voluntary quickly turned mandatory evacuations. At the time I was sitting on the freeway on my way to get my hair done. Priorities. [My children and dog were deposited safely at a relative's house, so stop looking at me like that] I'd barely made it past the exit to my own house before the wind brought fire and thick black smoke sweeping across the freeway. I was all, fuck this, and meandered my way through traffic, making a u-turn off the on-ramp mind you, with several other like-minded individuals in tow. They were like, this chick is not even kidding about saving her own ass - she is wise - posse out.

October of 2007 was more of the same. Except then I was situated in a doctor's office waiting room while my mother received x-rays for her broken hip and was alerted via the television that a fire now named after my neighborhood was melting patio furniture and licking the rear facing windows of several houses. That time I had to run home to retrieve Boy-Child#1 who was doing his homework. I had only been away from home for about forty-five minutes. The number of cars that were simultaneously exiting and entering the suburb was alarming.

So yesterday, here in 2008, I was a bit disturbed when I left my house to pick Girl-Child up from her kindergarten class and was met with (picture top left) at the end of my street [which was also the moment that I high-tailed it back to my house to grab my camera who's a good blogger?... coochie cooo]. When I turned the corner and rounded the bend, this image (picture top right) laughed in my face. The view from Girl-Child's elementary school (bottom left) was totally deja vu. And (bottom right) is from the grocery store parking lot because? Milk and dishwasher detergent. Again, priorities people.

P.s. New post up at Blissfully Domestic! One word: Clooney.

When I read the first line I saw "raging BUSH fire" instead of "brush". I laughed.

PS I'm totally proud of your pics :) Props, sis.

I used to come read your blog periodically but haven't for a long, long time! How refreshingly fun! I'm going to have to go back and read a bunch. And I don't mean any of the content is fun regarding the brush fires...you just have such of a humorous way of writing about everything!!! :)

I'm with Dorothy - I totally misread the title of your post... heh.

Scary fires! That's one natural disaster I haven't been forced to live through - hope it's not too awful this year!

Um...we had a snowstorm here once...and...and...sometimes we have...um...lightning...

Ah, forget it. I can't compete.

GAH! I'd be sleeping with a fire extinguisher under my pillow. I'm not sure why, but it would sound like a good idea.

i lived in Fallbrook, a small town nestled up against Camp Pendleton. right next to the weapons station. aka PLEASE LET ME BURN territory, bc it is dry, vacant, and .. well.. dry.

i forget what year- i believe it was either 2000 or 2001- we had to evacuate bc you could see the fire FROM MY FRONT YARD. and im not talkin' smoke here. i am talkin STRAIGHT UP BLACK AND RED FLAMES.

scared the f-ing pants right off of my teenage ass. we high-tailed it outa there. thankfully, it shifted at the last minute (sound familiar? it was literally FIVE MINUTES frm eating my house) and we were all saved. De Luz was completely demolished.

santa anas, i love them and miss them, but they do bring destruction. i pray you and yours are spared this year, as you have been before.

Yikes. We get our brush fires here in FL in June/July right before rainy season. I hate them and they freak me out. I hope it stays far away from you.

We have brand new neighbors not acquainted with the ways of wildfires in SoCal. I promised her I'd call her cell phone if we get a middle of the night reverse 911 call.

It's hard to relax during October after you've had your patio furniture melted and your house was saved only by a timely wind change.

We don't get fires like that here in Vegas. Nothing to burn, though we do have the winds. Unless you consider our 115f July temps as bad enough (at least we don't lose our houses that way).
Florida gets hurricanes, I guess there are some drawbacks to living in paradise.

Yep, we're eating the smoke. It funnels right through the canyon on its way to the sea.

what pisses me off about the news coverage is that they don't have very good maps and they don't keep them up to date. So you don't know what's happening.

The headline on KCAL 9 says they worry it will jump the 101 freeway. WTF? Is that true? or is that just recycling that quote by the LAFD guy yesterday?

Good luck to you, Tootsie -

Be safe, and I'll keep my fingers crossed that the fire is under control soon...

I've smelled smoke here from a wildfire, and I've seen the smoke miles and miles away...but those pictures are scary.

Holy crap Batman! I would totally not even be able to sleep at night knowing something that scary was that close to my house! I have friends in Cali and they have told me how bad the air quality gets when there are fires. I hope they are under control soon, if not you are always to come visit down here in the dirty south! ;)
