Your Opinion Counts and Stuff

Tomorrow is, once again, that time to visit the hairdresser. Twelve years ago, just after Boy-Child#1 was born, I did that thing that many new mothers do...I got all of my hair cut off. I'm talking short. Like Ellen DeGeneres short. And with the seventy pounds of weight I gained during the pregnancy, coupled with the new hair, I looked like your stereotypical Walmart shopper. Poor Mr. Farklepants. I was so fetching prior. He probably wondered what the hell he'd gotten himself into. He didn't realize he'd end up married to a house with Trump hair.

The look was so bad, I scared myself. And from that point on my hair has been long. Various lengths of long, but long and/or long-ish. I vowed never again to wear my hair short.

(Tootsie and current hair above right with little sis, and no we're not wearing the same dress because that would be dumb.)

But lately, I find myself really drawn to Christina Applegate. I mean, who wouldn't? You too right? Cuz, she's like hot and stuff. I'm really diggin' her hair. Like, totally. Here's her look from the show Samantha Who?

I'm thinking about making a BIG change. Not at tomorrow's appointment. Oh no no. I need more time to crawl deep inside myself in a very introspective and nonsexual way and visit my place of tremendous courage [no, not that place but sometimes just as difficult to locate]. Or talk myself out of it. Or discuss this with my husband because he's the one who will have to live with my nervous breakdown if I regret the decision. And I kinda like having food and shelter; and love and support. And sex. Right now he's reading this and thinking, ohmyhell.

I'm asking you to cast your vote in the poll below. Please know that I've considered that my current hair allows me to throw it into a ponytail whenever it's being stupid. And that I can just wash and go, sporting a wavy look. I've also weighed the pros and cons associated with short hair.

Con: I'll have to style it everyday. With what looks to be a lot of time with a curling iron.
Pro: It's different.

Okay....GO!

i vote long or longishly short. messy shortish would be cute too. clearly i can't make a decision.

okay i couldn't really vote HOW I WANTED bc dude! only two options??? psh-shaw.

anyway, i vote a mix between the two. the samantha who is a little blunt for me. and too much curling action. maybe think of getting a 'relaxant' (aka a really chill perm) and doing a little layering action.

its just me personally. i am TERRIFIED of the blunt jaw bob cut.

I had a very similar experience and after years of long hair (which I only wore in ponytails or buns) I made a random decision to go short. I like it. It doesn't take as much time as I thought. I hope you take the plunge. Sometimes change is fun!

I LOVE the samantha who hair. (Is she related to cindy-lou who? Sorry. I love the Grinch who stole Christmas) Anyways, cute hair. I vote cut it!

I love Christina's hair too. It's sassy. Go for it.

Okay. Take this as if you were listening to your MUCH older and EQUALLY focused on her hair sister. Which, if we share a gene pool, we would be. Focus on MUCH older, please.

Freshen the current look, if you must feel the change, by a little more off the length (it really livens up the hair to whack off all the oldest most damaged garbage ... something 80 year old women who have neck jobs must be thinking too), but you are a STUNNING long haired blonde. It suits you. No. Really. I mean SUITS you in a "this is the genuine me" kinda way suits you.

Vary your color a little bit, if you must. More piecie. Add other colors of blonde and gossamer. I know you're not averse to spending some $$$$ on your hair ... and color, unlike that pile of 6-inch strands on the floor, can be changed tootsie suite.

Starlets can get away with short curly bobs, because they have short curly stylists that follow them around with all manner of product and electric tools.

When I did the survey of "what should I do with my hair" Overwhelmingly my blog friends said, "CHANGE! CHANGE!" But, the decider was my hairdresser who looked at me in the mirror and said, "Holy hell, woman, why would you change a good thing." Or, something like that.

So hear me now, Tootsie von Gorgeous. "Holy Hell woman. Why would you change such a stunning, knock-out, groovey thing."

"no, not that place but sometimes just as difficult to locate" - at least for men.

Anyway...CA is adorable and I voted for her hair but def keep in mind all that styling. Hair does grow though. I always tell myself that.

Well, crap. I was going to say cut it until I read Marti's comment.

Your hair is divine. Lovely. But if you were to go shorter, I like the bob because a)it would be easy to grow out again if you didn't like it and b) I like change.

So I am no help at all. Can't wait to see what you choose.

I'm big on the middle ground. Go shorter and more layered but never, EVER give up your ability to throw it in a ponytail. I went too short for the ponytail and have very curly hair. It ain't pretty in the morning - and sometimes the afternoon.

It's time for CHANGE. Besides it's still long.

I LOVE Christina's hair these days, best she's ever looked! Such a cute hairstyle. (and I really like her show!)

But I think it would be a real pain to keep up.

And, your face is a different shape from hers - I'm not sure I'm diggin' it for you.

I have thin, fine hair, like an 85 year old man, so I have no choice but to wear it short. I would KILL for long hair. So don't go too short, 'kay? Then I can live long-haired vicariously through you.

Mr Lady said...

I think you could ROCK that do! I'd do it if my face didn't look like a Roma tomato. :)

I love Christina's short curly hair. That being said she also has a stylist that helps her make it look perfect. I recently cut off my hair into a short bob, and now I regret it everyday. Maybe you could do shoulder length with some layers.

My bff called me the other day to tell me I should get the Samantha Who 'do too. (I so did not mean to have a Dr. Seuss moment there)

I think it would look great on you.

Mommy2Twinkies-Deb said...

Personally I like your long hair. I'd be afraid to cut mine off, as I've done it before. Keep it long I say.

I'm going to be annoying and not vote.

I've always had long hair. 4 times in my 30 years I have chopped it off, but I always grow it back.

Last season I fell in looooove with the samantha. I'm still trying to decide if I want to do it a whole year later!

It's a really really cute cut. Really cute. But long hair is so nice.

Decisions. I can't make them.

SO GO FOR IT! You have the blonde, you have the face, go for it!

Pro: That style looks good straight...no harder than what you have now....

Go for broke and get amazing highlights

Marmarbug said...

I think you would look AWESOME with Samantha Who's haircut!

Baby Favorite said...

IMO, ponytails are overrated... but then I'm a devout short-hair girl. I don't like SHORT as in boyish, but I like long layers in a short bob. That's just me, though.

Debbie said...

It's only hair. Go for it!

Scott-N-Heather said...

I cut all my hair off about a year ago. Something about having a toddler and a mop of hair to mess with wasn't working for me. I love it and always get compliments.

Super Duper easy, wake up and it's practically already styled.

Do research though about best short cut for your face shape :)

Madge said...

you are in so much trouble. we are mostly voting for you to cut it....

Jason, as himself said...

You would look oh so very cute with the Samantha Who haircut.

Jacki said...

I can't cut my own hair shorter than my shoulders so I just don't have the guts to say cut it. However the Samantha is REALLY cute!

Jenn @ Juggling Life said...

My philosophy is that it's only hair. You can always grow it back. Can you do the Samantha Who without some kind of perm? If you need a perm can you still color without damage? These are the burning questions I would need answered to make an informed decision.

That's not TOO dramatic. Want dramatic? I went from long curly blonde to short straight brown overnight: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/92/267625191_ea595c4e93_o.jpg

The Samantha Who style is cute, but it looks like a lot of work too. Unless you have naturally wavy/curly hair.

Anonymous said...

I like the Samantha-esque one. I think you could still wear it without all the curling when you feel lazy. It'll just be a heavily layered look.

Anonymous said...

I think the blunt jaw bob cut would look great on you and make your hair have more bounce/body (not that it doesn't already, but you'll have even more!).

Samantha Who is a little too curly.

The Girl Next Door said...

OK your hair and hers are totally of different textures I'm thinking, so while I think shorter might be totally cute, you have to do what's right for your hair.

And you are totally hawt in that photo so don't sell yourself short!

I found a new hairdresser through my boss (my boss is a guy how weird and so is his/my hairdresser) who told me honest things about my hair I haven't heard since college. So find a good one with experience who will be HONEST and give you the hard news. And you'll look awesome.

OK and btw I'm a girl who always hates my hair no matter what so I'm thinking you should not listen to me AT ALL.

Sorry.

YOU WILL HAVE TO CURL YOUR HAIR EVERY DAY.

Just sayin'.

(I left this comment on the poll but meant to put it here.)

Burgh Baby said...

Hair grows.

And, that cut would totally work with it left straight.

Madame Queen said...

I voted for The Usual only because I'm about to go for a similar Samantha Who cut and I don't want people all over the internet thinking I'm copying Tootsie (who we all KNOW is really copying Bossy. whatevs.) :)

I'm just tired of fighting the curl that lives in my hair. If you really want to go for it, I say go for it. It's just hair. If you hate it, it will grow back.

Mary Anna said...

I just cut mine shorter again, based on a photos accompanying an article about graying hair in Cooking Light. (Yep, old ladies in a diet magazine were my inspiration! Sad!) Anyhoo, I change my hair up quite a bit ... it will always grow back (I hope!)

Allison said...

I was also dealing with this dilemma recently. My hair is already kinda short, but I wanted to go much shorter. My decision? I'm letting it grow until it's long enough to donate and I'm chopping it all off. Not bald of course, but it'll be short.

I say do it. If you don't like it your hair will grow back. You can probably still pull it back at that length, but it'll be a really small ponytail. Andrew calls mine my baby buki because it looks like my buki blush brush when I have it pulled back.

Donna-Michele said...

Good points all. First, you should know that me and my sister grow our hair long and donate it every few years. My hubbie and I donated our hair in April as a tribute to our baby Anna-Sara, who we delivered at 22 weeks and 5 days, she died the day she was born. It was his first time and I have the Alfalfa photos to prove it. It was a wonderful affirming experience for us to share and we are glad we did because it felt right to us.
I also have a niece who has alopecia from living too near a power plant that spewed toxins into the air while she was outside playing. Her wish for this Christmas is to get a wig that fits. She is four.

All that said. It is your head. You are lovely. You could wear your hair anyway, including the 'Sinead O' shaved thing. Put your hand on your upper tummy and think about a different color ... how's your tummy feel? Then think short hair ... now how are you? Think shorter cute style, thing Christina Applegate, whatever. Go with the one that gives you the good tummy feel. Trust your gut.

ROFL about the Walmart shopper image...So been there...After my second child I cut off all my hair--something seriously went weird with my hair during that pregnancy (or maybe it was because I had another child not long before)...anyway my normally normalish looking naturally curly hair became a large blob of an SOS cleaning pad (or Brillo pad)...Around that time Halle Berry was sporting that hot pixie cut and in I went to my stylist with a picture of Halle and got myself a pixie...small oversight--I look NOTHING like Halle...I caught a reflection of myself in the mall the next day (pushing a stroller with a 18 mth old) and carrying a newborn in a sling...my milk was just coming in and I was in agony...more so when I realized that with my pixie I actually looked more like Kathy Bates than Halle Berry...very much like Kathy Bates..not that there is anything wrong with Kathy Bates (afterall I look like her) but I just had not come around to realizing I was a "Kathy Bates" vs. a "Halle Berry"...now I know...
