Someone, Please, Help a Sister Out

This is Dorothy Z. She is my little sis. What you cannot tell from this photo is that I'm old enough to be her mother she has the coveted SJP [that would be Sarah Jessica Parker for those of you who don't speak Sex and the City-ease] hair. Thick and spiral curly. She is considering bangs. The photo on the left is her current look. The photo on the right is a photoshopped rendering brought to you by Mr. Farklepants of what she may (probably? will? possibly? not at all?) look like. It's a pretend "after" photo.

What do you think? Should she go for it? Or leave well enough alone? I'll withhold my opinion. Please vote in the poll below, if you would be so inclined. The poll is scheduled to close August 31st.

*I hope the poll shows up when published because Blogger isn't showing it to me in the preview which of course makes me wonder if it either isn't working at all or just doesn't show up in the preview. Which makes Blogger kind of useless in that regard. At the moment. I give it the raspberries.

****Edited to add: YAY!! It showed up! But, uhhhh...ignore that "answer 4 and 5" because, what? Clearly, I goofed.

I totally think she should go for it, but a little longer, more dramatic looking. Her facial structure would carry off thick, eyebrow length ones so well

Meg said...

I don't think she should do it, I'm not entirely sure it's a look that suits her. She looks lovely as is.

I think she would look cute with the bangs. I wish I could wear bangs.

I would say longer side pieces would be a better look, kind of like longer layers that frame her face. She could have the shortest ones right at eye level to get the framing qualities of bangs without the commitment. Also, if her hair goes crazy super curly, those things will be a bitch if they're going to cowlick out or something annoying if she doesn't feel like straightening her hair that day.

while the bangs look fab when straight, if her hair gets curly it would be a nightmare to maintain - trust me, been there, done that.

Suburban Correspondent said...

Am I the only one who is confused here? I don't see "thick" or "spiral-curly." Tell her to stop straightening her hair and use Totally Twisted on the curls. It makes my Anna look gorgeous.

Or, if she wants to keep it straight (which is also pretty, it just seems a shame to waste naturally curly hair), bangs would be fine, but she should shorten the length of the hair closer to her shoulders; the current length is dragging her face down. (or that might just be the foreshortened perspective of the photo, I don't know)

Either way, she'll look great!

O'Neal (The Woman In Charge Around Here) said...

I am totally biased here, and say HELL NO to bangs. They are unruly and rebellious and will only look good the day you stay home in your pj's and nobody will see.
She is still gorgeous though, either way she decides to go!

I'm not really one to give advice as I am not the least fashion conscious, but I'm thinking bangs and Little Sis aren't made for each other.

I'm going to nix the bangs too. Embrace the curl, Dorothy!!

I agree w/suburban correspondant, if she keeps it straight, the length needs to come up a bit.

Laura said...

With her long face, she could afford to have some of the length taken off. She would look even more fab! The bangs help shorten the length of the face, but if she took off some inches, she wouldn't need the bangs!

Amy said...

She's just adorable and therefore, can't really go wrong. I say "no" to the bangs given the length of her hair. Is she took the hair a little shorter, the bangs would work really well.

But as I said, she is too cute! She should do whatever she wants.

I see some clown skewed your results and hit answer 4. Funny guy, huh?

I'm not a fan of bangs and the maintenance associated with them. If she is so inclined to throw up a pony tail here and there, bangs make that not so practical. If she tends to sweat, bangs stick to your head.

She looks so stinking much like YOU, though. Therefore, she is lovely no matter which way she goes.

I also vote for the thick and spiraly curly look she seems to forego in favor of the straight look. I also think bans with thick and curly do not mix. AND THEY TAKE FOREVAH TO GROW OUT.

I think she should go for it but longer layered bangs, not so short and blunt.

Absolutetly and totally YES.
She looks way softer and younger with the bangs. She has a larger forehead with an oval face and the bangs are desperately needed....

Do I sound like I work for the bang association of america? I don't just want her to look her best.

Great PS work by the way!

Madame Queen said...

Yeah, like zoeyjane said, maybe some longer bangs, but I think those (and this could be completely because of Mr. F's photoshop skillz) make her look older.

Gretchen said...

I'm only going to say that, given the current length of her hair, if she should decide that she doesn't like the bangs, it would take a LONG time to get the bangs long again, or else she'd have to chop off her long tresses to match the bangs-growing-out length. So I'd say NO to the bangs, or else YES to the bangs but also add some more layering.

Manic Mommy said...

Yay, bangs! She's got a beautiful angular face and could carry the bangs well.

As for the think and curly concern, I've got that and bangs. They're easy enough to straighten and on really humid days, you just throw them back in a headband.

No bangs. Yes, she'd look adorable, but she'd probably regret it.

Yikes! had I known this was going to be so widely seen I would have spent more time on it. I did this in like 20 minutes at my desk (when I should have been working) and put it up when it was "good enough" to get the idea.

I agree the bangs need to be longer and more "wispy" but as it turns out that is a hard effect to achieve in Photoshop in 20 minutes.

But I am now inspired now to get it right thanks to your comments plus I owe Dorth a decent haircut!

That being said I like the bangs, even the short chopped version here. I think she has a pretty good Uma Thurman vibe going in that picture.... Only prettier.

Tootsie Farklepants said...

Mr. F~ heh. You said "wispy". Your Jose Eber is showing.

EatPlayLove said...

NO! Here is my reasoning behind the NO. There will come a time, later in life, when Dorothy Z will not have that beautiful forehead, for some wrinkles or skin damage may move in.

So, Dorothy Z, go with bangs when you are like 40ish, you are way too young for bangs..I mean obviously if your big sis is comparing you to that old lady SJP!

(I don't think SJP is old, but if I was DZ I would!)

Don't do it!!!! Her hair is great AS IS!

LOL... well I have to "get into" my subject when Photoshopping, so I am really channeling my internal hairdresser... otherwise it just doesn't come out right...

On the bright side, I am taking you antiquing with me this weekend!

Just did bangs two days ago and was very scared. But I love them now.

She looks hotter without the bangs (although she is still pretty hot either way).

AGSoccerMom said...

I am with zoeyjane, longer bangs are sexier than short ones.

Indy said...

I think the bangs would make her look older. She could do bangs but I think the hair would have to be a little shorter. Can't wait to see her results.

Barb said...

The only problem with curly-haired girls going for bangs is that it's a LOT of maintenance. It's very annoying on those days when you just want to wear your hair curly (usually because it's easier) to have to figure out what to do with the bangs. Let them be curly? Straighten just the bangs? Pin them back?

Minnesota Matron said...

She's beautiful! Don't cut a lock!!

Mrs. G. said...

I think the bangs are sexy.

Glennis said...

she's gorgeous both ways - seriously!!!

She has such pretty eyes- they get lost with the bangs look. Awesome photoshop job!

MommyTime said...

I think she could go for bangs, but not those bangs (no offense, photoshop hubby genius). Either lighter, thinner ones, a bit more breezy looking (those heavy thick ones overwhelm her face); or longer ones that work more sideswept to keep her forehead a bit more clear. She looks quite tiny, and thick heavy bangs are just too much on her. So I voted "no" -- but I really wanted to vote "yes if a really good stylist cuts them."

Swirl Girl said...

I like the color of the new hair, but just say no to bangs.

JCK said...

I wouldn't go for this heavy bangs look. Some layers perhaps? Her forehead is lovely.

Jenn @ Juggling Life said...

It's so hard to take back the cutting of the bangs--maybe longer, sideswept bangs. A change, but not too drastic.

Anonymous said...

She has a large forehead, not that there is anything wrong with that. I think the bangs will cover that up and look great!!

Don't do the bangs if her hair is naturally curly. Every day it's humid she will regret it!! Too much work to keep curly bangs straight.

OHmommy said...

Im thinking about bangs too. Again.

I think you sister looks lovely the way she is.

I also said Hell No to bangs...what about a long side swipped bang-ette...is bang-ette even a word? lets pretend it is

I adore your blog and found ya from NGIP blog

I like the bangs.

I hate her for being so beautiful and thin and having such great hair, but I like the bangs.

Victoria said...

I totally agree with eatplaylove. DZ has a GORGEOUS forehead, and it shouldn't be covered up.

Plus, she could get bangs later when she has fine lines to hide. ;)

If she REALLY wants bangs, I would say longer, like cheekbone length or longer maybe, swept off the forehead from the middle or side, so that you still see her nice forehead. ;)

Anonymous said...

She's very pretty and I think the bangs/fringe might not be so flattering with such long hair, AND, having super curly hair myself, bangs have ONLY worked in the past for me when it's been shorter and layered. But alas, I am not thin, so that probably has a lot to do with it.

However, having said that, when you have tons of curly hair and want to let it do it's thing and not straighten it, bangs don't work well, unless you pin them back or under.

You have great genes if your family.

Angie McCullagh said...

I think it would look great on her. But if she regrets it, it would take a long time to grow them back. But she's young. She has time.

Do it, do it, do it!

Saucy said...

We are big SJP fans around here, I vote no. SJP wouldn't do bangs, would she?

The Nice One said...

I did the bangs thing when I was about 20. It instantly made me look about 6. And it was creepy. For some reason, I think it makes your sister look older. She has great hair, btw. But keep it sans bangs.

I missed the poll but I think she should go for the bangs!!!!

It's a little more updated and fun and why not!!
